Hello from New Group Lead Volunteer

Categories:

My name is Andrew Steele, and I am the Group Lead Volunteer (a role previously known as Group Scout Leader). I have been in the role for just over a term now since taking over from Matthew in December, so I thought I would do a quick blog to introduce myself and the role of Group Lead Volunteer. I would first like to say a huge thank you to all our volunteers at the 21st; without their support this group could not run.

My Scouting journey started many years ago when I was six years old. I started as a Beaver at the 21st St Helens and I worked my way up through all three sections of the group (Beavers, Cubs and Scouts) and on to Explorers at Windle Wombles. I returned to the 21st as an Assistant Scout Leader, and then became Scout Leader. I also have the role of Digital Lead within St Helens District.

I am passionate about the benefits of what Scouting can bring to young people, from their first night away to teamwork and problem-solving skills, which allow them to build confidence and try new activities that they may not otherwise get the chance to do. I have led a number of different adventurous activities, from climbing Snowdon to a week expedition in Shetland wild camping with Explorers. Most recently I organised and led an outdoor climbing weekend for our Scouts in the Peak District.

My new role as Group Lead Volunteer is to help to make sure that our group is well run, has enough volunteers in each of our sections and that they have all the things they need to provide an exciting weekly programme to our young people. I work closely with our Group Chair and the members of our Group’s Trustee Board to ensure the sound running of the charity.

I have several aims for the coming year and hope you will all support me in them:

  • Start Group fundraising again for urgent repairs to our hut and equipment.
  • Run a number of whole group events, such as a Group camp and a sponsored walk.
  • Making the group more visible in the local community.

The Scout group is fully run by volunteers, and we always welcome any help. No matter how much time you can give or your skills we have a role suitable for you. Find out more or sign up to volunteer by visiting our volunteering page on our website.

Please come and say hello if you see me at a section meeting or at camp, you can also drop me an email at [email protected].
